Laboratory Assistant

1. Set up equipment, chemicals and supplies for chemistry, physics and biology labs at the secondary level under the teacher’s guidance; 2. Prepare molar solutions of acids by diluting concentrated solutions; Calculate relative volumes of concentrated acid and water; 3. Calculate required mass and prepare standard solutions of salt and bases; 4. Ensures safe work environment by complying with regulations for handling hazardous materials, and follows waste regulations and proper procedures in the disposal of chemicals; 5. Cleans up hazardous spills, such as acids and bases and administers first aid related to chemical accidents as required; 6. Prepares buffer solutions of a given pH; 7. Performs titrations to verify the concentration of standardized solutions; 8. Maintains and does simple repairs of lab equipment where possible; 9. Properly cleans glassware using the appropriate solvents where necessary; 10. Maintains set of reagents for specific lab activities; 11. Ensure adequate supply of equipment and materials is always available; 12. Keep track of materials borrowed by teachers and keep a log of the same; 13. Assists teachers in supervising activities, such as field trips; 14. Safe storage and removal of harmful chemicals and equipment; 15. Overseas the inventory of lab equipment and chemical supplies including ordering under the direction of the HOD; 16. Assist with an after school activity (Science Club) as directed by the HOD; 17. Prepare and present displays of students’ work; 18. Assist in maintaining classroom bulletin boards/displays that represent children’s interest and learning; 19. Performs other assigned comparable or transient duties, which are within the area of knowledge and skills required by this job description Expected Skills and Interpersonal Requirements o Ability to manage a science laboratory and relevant chemicals & equipment. o Genuine desire to work with children - exhibits patience and empathy when dealing with students. o Able to address and treat students with respect and dignity. o Willingness to learn and grow in a professional environment. o Ability to work individually and as a part of a team. o Experience working with children, preferably in a school environment. o Computer literate. o Good interpersonal and communication skills (in English). o Organised, reliable, dependable and works well independently. o Communicate with the staff professionally, politely and proactively. o Ability to clearly communicate and understand instructions. o Ability to work with mínimal supervision. o Patience and Flexibility
