Your Role

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative Engineer to join our Submarine Systems & Networks Engineering group.

As a Submarine Specialist, you will be working in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary group to position Ciena Submarine Solutions. You will work in a self-directed regional team, where you will need to be self-motivated and will require strong self-leadership skills to explore solutions to engineering problems.

You will rely on your creativity and diverse range of engineering experience and interact with Research and Development; Product Management; Sales; and post sales Deployment teams in order to prove in new products, features and applications.

The ideal candidate will be motivated by working on leading edge Optical, Ethernet and Software Management technologies; direct interaction with customers; travel for submarine cable upgrade tender clarification and contract clarification meetings; influencing both technical and commercial direction within Ciena.

Your Responsibiltiies

Technical prime for complete customer engagement including tender clarifications and contract clarification meetings for submarine customers.Respond to RFPs and customer technical inquiriesPerform network design and BOM creationConstruct pricing schedules as part of RFP responsesLead and support network designs and engineering documentation work (including equipment rack layouts)Work with regional product primes, PLM, link budgeting and R&D teams to propose product enhancements to meet customer requirementsBe capable of presenting to large audiences on the subject matter, including the ability to present at conferencesSupport global account/sales engineering community with pre-sales activities that include customer bid (RFx) technical support, market readiness support, technical consultation, solution evaluation and design, market trials support, and other engineering Q&A support.Contribute to continuous improvement of techniques and methodology (through post mortem analysis of problems/solutions encountered).Define, create and validate Submarine Network solution designs and field test parameters including deliverables such as customer presentations, Method of Procedures, test plans, and application guides to facilitate understanding and introduction of product/solution into customer networks.The ability to mentor other System EngineersAct as the first-line support "Go-To" person for allocated sales opportunities within allocated accounts.

Requirement

Estimated travel rate of 30% with potential to rise to 40%-50% during occasional peak periods. Travel remains limited during COVID conditions.Exhibit a high degree of presentation, interpersonal and communications skillsRelationship skills and ability to inspire trust and influence othersStrong Planner and organizer with good people networking abilitiesAbility to handle stressful situations under time constraintsProven ability to work in a self-directed team environment, taking on-board round table discussions on solution architecture.Ability to liaise with CIENA engineering personnel to capture new feature requirements, articulate key feature requirements and position CIENA solution to meet those needs.Full working Knowledge of Converged Optical Ethernet and Network Management techniquesAbility to respond to RFP's and communicate technical quotations accurately.

Education & Experience

Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent field of discipline. Masters in Optical Engineering an asset.Minimum 5 years in telecommunications industry related to DWDM (Layer 0) optical transmission systems, optical engineering concepts, technologies, instrumentation and/or test methodologiesMinimum 2 years in a Submarine specific role with direct involvement in an upgrade project. Technical knowledge in submarine SLTE and SIE solutions. Experience on consortia upgrade projects a strong asset.Technical knowledge in Converged Optical Ethernet (Layer 1/2/3) systems, technologies (OTN, Carrier Ethernet, IP), instrumentation and/or test methodologiesExperience with Layer 0 optical test equipment: Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA); SONET/SDH/Ethernet/OTN test sets; Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), etcFamiliarity with link budgeting concepts and fiber-optic link impairments (e.g. attenuation, chromatic dispersion (CD), four-wave mixing (FWM), self-Phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM), spectral hole burning, polarization-dependant gain (PDG), reflection, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), receiver sensitivity, bandwidth, etcKnowledge/experience with 10G/40G/100G and higher rate modulation formats and concepts, especially coherent technology and an ability to articulate these to customersExcellent English communication (written and oral) skills a key requirement – interaction ranges from executive to technical and operational personnelKnowledge of Ciena Submarine Solutions a definite asset
