Organizational Context:

  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 191member National Societies (NSs). The overall aim of IFRC is "to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by NSs with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world." IFRC works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises.
  • IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement), together with its member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The work of IFRC is guided by the following fundamental principles:

humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.- IFRC is led by its Secretary General, and has its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.


The Headquarters are organized into three main Divisions:
(i) National Society Development and Operations Coordination; (ii) Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization; and (iii) Management Policy, Strategy and Corporate Services.- IFRC has five regional offices in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. IFRC also has country cluster delegations and country delegations throughout the world. Together, the Geneva Headquarters and the field structure (regional, cluster and country) comprise the IFRC Secretariat.- IFRC has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment and other forms of harassment, abuse of authority, discrimination, and lack of integrity (including but not limited to financial misconduct). IFRC also adheres to strict child safeguarding principles.- Nature-based solutions (NbS), are actions to protect, sustainably manage or restore ecosystems that address societal challenges simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits. These approaches have recently gained much traction as they address both climate adaptation and mitigation challenges, among other benefits.- NbS are a priority area of work for the IFRC. The IFRC network has set ambitious objectives for 2025 that 100 National Societies implement nature-based solutions focused on reducing disaster risks and adapting to and mitigating climate change. Nature can also indirectly contribute to the other objectives to better protect people from heat support coastal cities to adapt to longer-term impacts of climate change. NbS are one of the three focus area of the IFRC's Global Climate Resilience Platform, which aims to catalyze accelerated investment and support for locally-led climate action that reaches the most vulnerable.

Job Purpose:

The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most disaster-prone in the world. In recent years, the frequency and intensity of hazards have increased, exacerbated by climate and environmental crises.

To strengthen community resilience, National Societies have been working with nature for years in a variety of ways:
improving food security, generating income, hazard mitigation measures.

However, these activities often feel disjointed and lack a coherent vision, hindering our ability to understand their collective impact on the community resilience landscape in Asia Pacific.

Without a clear vision of how different initiatives contribute to the bigger picture, it has been difficult to visualise change, measure progress, identify areas for improvement and optimise our collective efforts.


It is necessary to take stock of past and current initiatives involving nature undertaken by National Societies in the Asia Pacific region and to set common goals to join forces and increase our regional impact.


The consultant "_National societies working with nature, Mapping and way forward in Asia Pacific_", in collaboration with the IFRC APRO Regional DRR coordinator and the British Red Cross (BRC) Regional DRR coordinator, is responsible for mapping the work with nature in the region up to 2024 in order to help RCRC National Societies in Asia Pacific as well as IFRC and international and national partners to understand the past and current status of the effort undertaken at national and regional level.
