A Medical Assistant provides essential support to healthcare professionals by performing both administrative and clinical duties.

They ensure the efficient operation of medical offices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities, contributing to high-quality patient care and smooth workflow.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Prepare patients for examinations by taking vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse).
  • Assist physicians during examinations and medical procedures.
  • Collect and prepare specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests on the premises.
  • Administer medications and vaccinations as directed by a physician.
  • Change dressings, remove sutures, and assist with minor surgeries.
  • Sterilize medical instruments and ensure examination rooms are clean and wellstocked.

Patient Interaction:

  • Greet and escort patients to examination rooms.
  • Conduct patient interviews, record medical histories, and update patient charts.
  • Provide patient education on treatment plans, medications, and followup care.
  • Answer patient questions and address concerns under the supervision of healthcare providers.

Administrative Duties:

  • Schedule and manage patient appointments.
  • Answer phone calls, handle patient inquiries, and relay messages to healthcare providers.
  • Maintain and update electronic health records (EHR).
  • Process insurance forms and handle billing and coding for insurance claims.
  • Perform general office duties such as filing, faxing, and managing correspondence.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies and medications.
  • Order and restock supplies as necessary.
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning properly and arrange for repairs as needed.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Follow all healthcare regulations and clinic policies, including OSHA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and security of patient information.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols and proper disposal of biohazard materials.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program or relevant certification.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using medical and office software (e.g., EHR systems, Microsoft Office).
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and clinical procedures.
  • Compassionate and patientfocused attitude.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a medical or healthcare setting is preferred but not required.
Work Environment

  • Typically works in a clinic, hospital, or outpatient healthcare facility.
  • May require long periods of standing and walking.
  • Occasional lifting of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Exposure to potentially infectious materials and medical waste.
  • Regular interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and administrative staff.
