Salary range: CI$81,252 – CI$109,296 per annum

The Hospital Counsellor works with patients and families who are transitioning care from hospital to hospice or palliative options to make the process as smooth as possible while diffusing potential conflict situations by promoting negotiation, reconciliation, and compromise. This includes acting as a trusted advisor and a source of emotional support for patient experience colleagues in approaching difficult situations. This role bridges the journey with care partners for patients transitioning to end of life support.

Primary Responsibilities: The successful candidate provides guidance, grief counselling, and other interventions to support families, patients, and staff as they traverse the care journey as receivers, supporters, and providers of care. He/she provides emotional support, facilitation of staff debriefings following traumatic events (difficult ambulance calls, infant deaths, treating other colleagues, trauma, or difficulties in their own family situations). The candidate proactively meets with patients, caregivers, families to engage in positive discussions that instill hope, finds peace, and provides a means to cope with their individual circumstance. Also accompanies the clinical team to communicate challenging messages to patients and families when requested. The candidate provides a confidential listening ear and source of advice for less experienced staff on the patient experience team dealing with challenging circumstances. Also provides orientation and training for patient experience staff on effectively engaging patient experiencing trauma, emotional turmoil, or other difficulties. He/she recommends patient and staff experience improvement opportunities; provides training to patient experience staff on appropriate techniques to engage, listen and support patients through difficult situations.

Qualifications & Experience: The successful candidate should possess a Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Theology. Must have a minimum of 5 years counselling experience i.e grief situations including leadership and supporting individuals through difficult life situations. Formal training in communication and delivery would be an asset. The candidate should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Must have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to function effectively under emotional stressful situations.
