The Cutting Tool Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing cutting tools and machining processes to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing operations. This role involves selecting appropriate tool materials, geometries, and coatings, as well as troubleshooting machining issues and collaborating with production, quality, and design teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tool Design & Selection: Develop and optimize cutting tools, including drills, end mills, reamers, inserts, and special tooling, for various machining applications.
  • Process Optimization: Analyze and improve machining parameters (feeds, speeds, depths of cut) to enhance tool life, surface finish, and production efficiency.
  • Material & Coating Evaluation: Select appropriate tool materials (carbide, high-speed steel, ceramics, etc.) and coatings (TiAlN, TiN, DLC, etc.) for different machining applications.
  • CNC Machining Support: Work closely with CNC programmers and machinists to ensure optimal tool performance in milling, turning, drilling, and grinding operations.
  • Tool Wear Analysis & Troubleshooting: Investigate tool failures, wear patterns, and machining defects to recommend corrective actions.
  • Cost Reduction Initiatives: Implement cost-saving measures through tool standardization, regrinding programs, and improved tool life management.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Liaise with suppliers, tooling vendors, and internal teams (production, maintenance, and quality) to integrate best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Technical Documentation: Maintain records of tool specifications, cutting data, test results, and process improvements.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years in cutting tool engineering, machining, or CNC programming.
  • Strong understanding of tool geometries, coatings, materials, and machining processes.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam, AutoCAD), and tool management systems.
  • Ability to analyze machining issues and provide innovative solutions.
  • Experience with industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices, or general manufacturing.
