The BESS Design & Project Engineer is responsible for the technical design, engineering, and implementation of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role involves leading design efforts, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, optimizing designs for performance and cost, and preparing technical proposals for new projects. The candidate will be an expert in energy storage systems and associated technologies, collaborating closely with clients, contractors, and internal teams to deliver high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective energy storage solutions.

Key Responsibilities:System Design and Engineering:
  • Lead the design and development of BESS projects, including system sizing, electrical design, layout planning, and thermal management.
  • Develop detailed electrical single-line diagrams (SLD), control architecture, and system specifications.
  • Select appropriate equipment (batteries, inverters, transformers, PCS, and BMS) to meet performance, regulatory, and budgetary requirements.
  • Conduct modeling and simulations for system performance using software tools like HOMER, DIgSILENT, or similar.
  • Perform grid interconnection studies and analyses, including fault current, load flow, and harmonics.
Proposal Preparation:
  • Prepare detailed technical proposals for BESS projects, including system design, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, including energy storage modeling, system sizing, and economic analysis.
  • Develop project timelines, identify risks, and outline scopes of work for inclusion in proposals.
  • Coordinate with sales, procurement, and project management teams to ensure accurate and competitive pricing.
  • Present technical proposals to clients, addressing technical queries and providing expert guidance.
Project Management and Leadership:
  • Oversee junior engineers and design team members in the development of detailed designs and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with project managers, contractors, and site engineers to ensure timely and accurate project execution.
  • Participate in project meetings to provide design updates and technical insights.
Compliance and Standards:
  • Ensure designs adhere to national and international codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEC, IEEE, and local regulations).
  • Ensure compliance with local grid interconnection requirements, utility regulations, and safety standards.
  • Conduct engineering calculations for electrical loads, voltage drops, fault currents, and protection systems.
Performance and Optimization:
  • Optimize system design to enhance performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Conduct reviews of designs to ensure technical accuracy and adherence to project requirements.
  • Monitor installed systems' performance to evaluate operational effectiveness and recommend improvements.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including design reports, specifications, as-built drawings, and BOMs (Bill of Materials).
  • Prepare technical studies and reports for ongoing and future projects.
  • Provide technical support during the bidding and procurement process, including drafting technical sections of proposals.
Technical Support:
  • Provide technical expertise during installation, commissioning, and testing phases.
  • Interface with clients, regulatory authorities, utilities (e.g., TNB), contractors, and consultants for design approvals and compliance.
  • Offer support to O&M teams for troubleshooting and resolving system performance or equipment issues.
Job Specification:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related fields.
  • Master's degree is added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in energy storage design and engineering, particularly in utility-scale projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design teams and manage multiple projects.
  • Proven experience in preparing technical proposals for successful project acquisition.
  • Relevant energy storage certifications (e.g., Certified Energy Storage Professional) are preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or equivalent is a plus.
