Role Purpose

Wood Mackenzie Power and Renewables provides a one-stop integrated subscription, analysis and advisory service for companies in the energy and related sectors, enabling our clients to make the best decisions within a constantly evolving global energy industry.

We are looking for a Power Market Analyst to join our team in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The successful candidate will be responsible for power market modelling and analysis covering Southeast Asian markets and supporting the wider Asia Pacific power and renewables team. He or she will use cutting-edge power dispatch models, engage industry executives on key market trends and forecasts, and deliver high-impact and original research and insights to clients.

Joining a global team of power and renewables experts, you will quickly contribute to our power research in Asia Pacific. You will analyse the impact of latest policies and investments with our regional power models, develop technology and power price outlooks, coordinate with experts and stakeholders to optimise forecasts, and work on latest modelling advances such as in battery storage and curtailment forecasting.

With guidance and reasonable inputs from the Research Director, you will also independently prepare high-quality, insightful reports, publications and presentations to influence clients' business decisions. Through research trips, client interactions and industry events you will have the opportunity to build and maintain relationships with a range of clients and other experts in the power & renewables industry. You will stay informed on key market trends and implement the latest ideas into power modelling and research reports.

This role includes industry-leading skills training and learning opportunities and has excellent career development potential for thought leadership, power modelling and strategy roles in the power & renewables industry.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Data tracking and analysis of Southeast Asian power and renewables market
  2. Managing and updating regional power dispatch models and price forecasts
  3. Produce insightful presentations and reports on power market trends and fundamentals
  4. Engage clients and industry leaders to understand market trends and solve challenges

About You

The role is ideal for an early career experienced professional who has a high aptitude for quantitative analysis and modelling, is passionate about understanding the big picture trends in the energy industry, and is looking to develop a career as a recognized power sector expert. The successful candidate will be expected to have the following qualities, qualifications and experience:

  1. High interest and aptitude for market analysis and power modelling, preferably with related work experience. Relevant on-the-job training will be given to the selected candidate.
  2. 2+ years of relevant work experience in an analytical role in the power & renewables industry such as a utility, developer, consultancy or investor. A good understanding of power markets, technologies and company strategies is of high value.
  3. Enthusiasm, curiosity, willingness to expand knowledge and skills, the ability to tackle challenging questions and to rethink conventional wisdom.
  4. A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering, science, economics, finance or other area. A graduate degree is preferred but not required.
  5. Strong Excel skills. Relevant experience in data and database management is a major plus.
  6. Programming and database management skills are a plus.
  7. Good team player, with strong organisation, planning and time management skills.
  8. Effective writing and presentation skills.
  9. Strong attention to detail.
  10. Fluency in English is mandatory; fluency in another Asian language is a plus.
