HEAD OF FIBER NETWORK, TELECOMMUNICATION

Lead the strategic direction, implementation, and operations of the fiber-optic network infrastructure for a telecommunications organization. The role requires a deep understanding of fiber network deployment, optimization, and maintenance, and will oversee teams responsible for delivering high-quality fiber services. The Head of Fiber will play a key role in advancing connectivity solutions to enhance the company's competitive position and support future technology demands.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Planning

  • Define and drive the vision and strategy for fiber network deployment and operations.
  • Establish fiber infrastructure growth targets, taking into account emerging technologies and market trends.
  • Develop business cases for fiber expansion projects and network enhancements.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to align fiber strategy with broader corporate objectives.

Project Management and Execution

  • Lead end-to-end fiber network deployment projects, including feasibility studies, design, planning, and budgeting.
  • Ensure timely project delivery while adhering to quality standards and staying within budget.
  • Work with cross-functional teams including engineering, construction, procurement, and regulatory affairs to coordinate activities.

Operational Excellence and Optimization

  • Oversee the operations and maintenance of existing fiber networks, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and continuously monitor network health, capacity, and quality metrics.
  • Implement best practices and process improvements to reduce downtime, increase efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of fiber engineers, project managers, and support staff.
  • Foster a collaborative culture that encourages innovation, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to keep the team current with industry standards and technological advancements.

Vendor and Stakeholder Management

  • Identify and manage relationships with external contractors, suppliers, and technology vendors.
  • Negotiate contracts and oversee vendor performance to ensure high-quality delivery.
  • Engage with regulatory bodies, community leaders, and industry partners to facilitate fiber deployment and regulatory compliance.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with fiber network operations and projects.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety and security, both for field teams and network assets.

Budgeting and Financial Oversight

  • Develop and manage the fiber network budget, focusing on cost-effectiveness and return on investment.
  • Track and report financial performance, ensuring accountability and adherence to approved budgets.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, Business Management, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in telecommunications or fiber network management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale fiber network deployments, operations, and optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of fiber technology, industry trends, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage complex, cross-functional projects.
  • Proficiency in budgeting, financial planning, and cost management.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate (JNCIP), Project Management & Implementation or other equivalent certification will be an added advantage.
