Job Purpose - Speech-language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists) assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in patients. Speech, language, and swallowing disorders result from a variety of causes, such as a stroke, brain injury, hearing loss, developmental delay, a cleft palate, cerebral palsy, or emotional problems. Duties - Communicate with patients to evaluate their levels of speech or language difficulty. - Determine the extent of communication problems by having a patient complete basic reading and vocalizing tasks or by giving standardized tests. - Identify treatment options. - Create and carry out an individualized treatment plan. - Teach patients how to make sounds and improve their voices. - Teach alternative communication methods, such as sign language, to patients with little or no speech capability. - Work with patients to improve their ability to read and write correctly. - Work with patients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow. - Counsel patients and families on how to cope with communication disorders. Responsibilities: - Conduct evaluations and establish individualized therapy plans with short and long term goals according to the standard procedures. - Perform the therapy plan professionally and prepare progress report for each client from time to time. - Preserves and protects client’s confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation. - Attends and participates in continuing education programs to monitor proficiency, expand current knowledge and enhance professional excellence. Willingly shares knowledge and provides clinical orientation to other members of the staff. - Manage student behavior through monitoring, supervising and assessing behavioral patterns - Maintains safe and clean working environment at all time. - Educating caregivers and family members of clients on patient care. - Ensure that verbal and written communications including tone, demeanour and content with children and parents are always professional, appropriate and respectful. - Demonstrates professionalism as a healthcare professional by being punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed work task.
