**JOB DESCRIPTION**

Position: Wildlife Analyst, Project Tekai

Location: Pahang, Malaysia

Panthera has been present in Malaysia through partners for almost a decade. In the beginning of 2020, Panthera incorporated an office in Malaysia - Panthera Wild Cat Conservation Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (Panthera Malaysia).

Panthera’s Project Tekai started in 2023 and is focused on the monitoring and protection of the Malayan tiger (_Panthera tigris jacksoni_), as well as all other wild cat species in the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve, also known as the Tekai Core Area in Pahang. The project’s main objectives are to stabilize and recover the population of tigers and other wild cats in the landscape following the Panthera’s Regional Development Strategy for South and Southeast Asia in Malaysia.

As a Wildlife Analyst for Panthera’s Project Tekai, s/he shall work in a team to carry out the fieldwork required to fulfil the project’s monitoring and research activities with the aim to study and conserve the wild cat population in the Kenyir-Taman Negara Core Area. S/he will do so by adhering to the code of conduct and standard operating procedures of Panthera Malaysia. As an employee of Panthera Malaysia, s/he will uphold the organisation’s values and operating principles and maintain a professional work etiquette at all times. S/he may be required to assist with other projects of Panthera in other field sites from time to time for transfer of knowledge, skills and experience, at the discretion of the Malaysia Country Manager as and when needed.

A Wildlife Analyst will be required to oversee and execute the biological monitoring activities to understand the status of Kenyir’s wild cat population and their prey in order to inform conservation strategies. S/he should be equipped with the right skills, knowledge and experience to make sound decisions to plan and guide the research and monitoring activities, as well as be involved directly with the field work with the field teams.

S/he will report to the Project Coordinator of Project Tekai/Country Manager of Panthera Malaysia.

Specific responsibilities include:

- Plan and execute all biological monitoring activities under the project.
- Work closely with the Project Coordinator, Problem Analyst, and the field team to ensure clear communication on operational logistics.
- Oversee and coordinate field assistants and work with patrol leaders to execute the wildlife monitoring surveys diligently, safely, and in a timely manner.
- Participate in the implementation of monitoring and patrol activities involving camera traps and other conservation research tools and methods.
- Upkeep the inventory of all equipment used for biological monitoring activities, including camera traps, cable locks, batteries, genetic sampling kit, etc.
- Analyse all related wildlife data and work alongside other analysts on the team to ensure information is amalgated to inform the overall strategy for wild cat protection and conservation.
- Systematically process and catalogue all wildlife data from the biological monitoring surveys following clear protocols.
- Assist in the development of Panthera Integrated Data System (IDS) and use IDS and any other related tools for the management of wildlife data.
- Produce reports on wildlife and all monitoring activities in a timely manner.
- Communicate key findings with project team members, partner agencies, and other stakeholders, in a timely manner and following data security protocols.
- Assist in the collection of patrol data to be stored into the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) database.
- Maintain a camera trap database on SMART Field Sensors
- Assist in the preparation of maps and equipment for patrols, briefing and debriefing sessions.
- Participate and lead in briefing, strategy planning, and debriefing sessions as and when required.
- Assist in the preparation of post operation reports, donor reports and proposals.

The essential job functions of a Wildlife Analyst of Project Tekai are as follows:

- Establish and maintain good relations with partners and stakeholders of the project.
- Ensure professional conduct within the team as well as with partners and stakeholders of the project, including government representatives.
- Ensure that all assigned activities are consistent with the schedule and all outputs are delivered on time and at the desired quality.
- Keep abreast with current research and developments in biodiversity monitoring and wildlife crime science. This may require attending various meetings, workshops, conferences and training programmes.
- Be familiar and comply with the policies and guidelines set out in the Panthera Employee’s Handbook ensuring that the code of conduct & ethics and other Panthera policies are followed at all times.
