1. Oversee students’ well-being in all aspects of their studies (physical and mental health). 2. Provide a platform for students to develop interpersonal skills outside the classroom (co-curricular activities). 3. Evoke great student experience that meets their expectations or exceeds them (halls of residence, food and other students services). 4. Monitor students to adhere to university policies and procedure, and take necessary action. 5. Adopt a sense of urgency to handle matters pertaining to any emergency or difficult situation that students face during their stay and studies at the university. 6. Plan, manage and execute events, sports and activities for students. 7. Prepare student for working life, offer workshops and guidance that will be useful for future employment. 8. Assist and handle administrative office work related tasks. 9. Ensure that the students’ interest is maintained throughout their studies. 10. Lead by example through professional and ethical behaviour on behalf of the university, following rules and regulations set by the university. 11. Monitor & manage hostel maintenance, roll-calls, cleanliness, security, discipline, complaints, activities, health, and communication with students. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS WARDEN: 1. Looking after both the male hostel students and the hostel buildings. 2. Assist with the allocations of students to their respective rooms on arrival in accordance to placement procedures. 3. Assist in maintaining and implementing overall discipline, cleanliness, hygiene, health, safety, security, primary pastoral support & residence life of students in hostels. 4. Ensure adherence to hostel rules, regulations, policies and code of conduct, & report any breach /transgression thereof (e.g. use of alcohol and drugs, smoking, lowering noise levels, safeguarding property, developing and maximising appropriate behaviour, ethics, integrity, community and cultural diversity). 5. Encourage a ‘home away from home’ environment/atmosphere. 6. Foster a supportive and positive hostel living experience. 7. Encourage & support student leadership in forming student hostel/house committee /residence life committees. 8. Encourage Student Service Programme activities: e.g. cleaning duties, horti/permi-culture, general assistance & community service /service learning involvement. 9. Encourage students’ involvement in extra-mural activities, peer mentor/helper & tutoring activities. 10. Attending and addressing conflict within the hostel. 11. Mediating in student disputes about noise, unacceptable behavior etc.; thus ensuring good order and behavior is maintained. 12. Report and maintain a data base on hostel incidents reports/logs i.e. damages, fire, vandalism, fights, alcohol and drug abuse, sick students, illegal residents and squatters, student misbehaviour etc. 13. Re-enforce student’s awareness and understanding of Hostel Emergency Procedures. 14. Responsible for weekly "quality checks" on all hostel areas including student rooms. 15. Report if cleaning, maintenance and security duties are not done sufficiently. 16. Responding to on-site emergencies out of hours (e.g. burst pipes, sickness, broken windows, burglaries, locked out of rooms etc.) and make relevant referrals. 17. Offer first aid support when needed and appropriate. 18. Taking an active part in effecting fire drills, crime prevention, health and safety awareness initiatives at hostels. 19. Supervise social events when these are arranged by the Hostel Committees. 20. Liaise with Students Affairs and Maintenance in order to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the hostel and that student issues or concerns are addressed. 21. Identify early warning signs from students that may be at risk (isolation, depression etc.) & report to Student Affairs (Hostel Coordinator). 22. Any other duties as may be allocated by the Hostel Accommodation Coordinator / Head of Student Affairs and as required that are considered reasonable.
