Job Description

  • Familiar with electrical power system engineering design, operation concepts, and philosophies. Designs electrical systems for power generation and energy facilities, including generators, transformers, switchgear, AC/DC distribution panels, diesel gensets, battery systems, UPS, cabling, earthing, and lightning protection.
  • Familiar with high-voltage (132kV & above) transmission system design operation concepts and philosophies. Designs transmission lines (HVAC & HVDC), either overhead lines, underground or undersea cabling.
  • Undertakes steady-state and dynamic simulations for renewable energy and power generation projects, carrying out Load Flow analysis, Short Circuit analysis, Reactive Power Compensation analysis, Harmonic analysis, and Dynamic Transient Studies, Protection System and Relay Setting, Earthing and Lightning Protection studies.
  • Performs generator connection studies for transmission and distribution line options and grid integration.
  • Models and validates systems, including associated components such as power plants, loads, and plant controls.
  • Assesses plant performance by simulating system disturbances.
  • Evaluates vendor proposals, selecting appropriate equipment, and ensures compliance with project specifications and prudent utility best practice standards.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve energy efficiency and optimize power plant system performance, implementing measures like power factor correction, energy management strategies, and equipment upgrades to reduce energy consumption and operating costs.
  • Ensures the performance, reliability, and safety of electrical components through engineering calculations and simulations.
  • Produces all types of electrical project deliverables, including electrical power system studies, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, cabling schedules, electrical load lists, and electrical protection.
  • Prepares tender documents, technical specifications for electrical equipment, detail design calculations for earthing, lighting, and cable sizing, and power cable schedules.
  • Contributes to bid preparation and provides technical input into power and energy projects.
  • Manages assigned tasks and delivers satisfactory results under tight timelines, working beyond normal hours if required.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Electrical / Power System Engineering degree from reputable universities; Master's degree holders have added advantages.
  • At least 15 years post-graduate working experience in the power generation, renewable energy, and transmission industry with proven track records in energy and power project design, power system studies, and consultancy works.
  • High proficiency in power system study and analysis tools such as PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, DIGSILENT Power Factory, etc.
  • Familiarity with Python scripting for PSS/E simulation automation and Fortran scripting for PSS/E dynamic model development is preferred.
  • Candidates with gas/thermal power and other renewable energy (solar, wind, biogas, biomass, WTE, etc.) project experience have added advantages.
  • Conversant in transmission and distribution grid codes, API, IP, NEC, IEEE, IEC, NEMA, and ANSI codes and standards.
  • Registered Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate (PEPC) with Board of Engineers Malaysia (or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Able to perform well under tight timelines and fast-paced environments, multi-tasking ability under minimum supervision as individual contributors or part of cross-functional teams.
  • Able and willing to mentor, train, and guide junior staff.
  • Good spoken and written English with strong report writing skills to prepare and furnish reports/drawings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively within diverse and multi-disciplinary environments.
  • Willing to travel or be based at outstations or project sites (local or overseas) as required.
  • Demonstrable high-quality work ethics and self-discipline with minimum supervision.
