**NATURE OF WORK**

An employee in this class provides specialized occupational therapy services for school students. Work involves evaluating students to determine need for occupational therapy; developing appropriate therapy programs, including routines for classroom and home adaptation; and providing therapy to students.

Services include direct service and/or consultation with school staff, families, medical personnel, community agencies, and others as needed. Employee is responsible for documenting planning and treatment activities, preparing reports of students’ progress, and consulting with parents and classroom teachers.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Knowledge of occupational therapy theories, models of practice, principles, and evidence based practice
- Preferred knowledge in Sensory Integration theory and practices
- Knowledge of human development throughout the life span
- Ability to articulate the role of occupational therapy in evaluation, intervention planning, and intervention process
- Ability to analyze tasks relative to areas of occupation, performance skills, activity demands, contexts, and student factors to implement the intervention plan
- Ability to recognize occupational performance deficits in the areas of personal care, student role/interactive skills, processing skills, play, community integration, and written communication
- Skill in gathering screening and evaluation data, completing checklists, histories, and interviews
- Ability to select, adapt, and sequence relevant occupations and purposeful activities that support intervention goals
- Skill in effective oral and written communication
- Ability to maintain safe environments, equipment, and materials
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and progress notes
- Willingness to be educated and trained for specific program implementation
- Initiative, strong work ethic, and the ability to positively interact and collaborate in a team environment
- Complete thorough evaluation, including muscle tone, range of motion/mobility, orthopedic needs, movement analysis, perceptive/fine motor skills, sensory motor processing and functional activities of daily living.
- Educate and demonstrate (verbally or written) therapy techniques to parents that can be incorporated into the home
- Develop and implement IEPs to meet the individual needs of the child.
- Attend staff meetings, in-service training, and continuing education courses as appropriate or required.
- Assess and make recommendations regarding the use of adaptive equipment as needed and provide written justification.
- Responsible for timely documentation of evaluation results, progress reports, discharge reports, daily notes, service tracker notes.
- Maintain professional clinical competency by attending certified CEU in-services and workshops.
- Other duties as assigned.

**MINIMUM TRAINING**

Graduation from an accredited program of occupational therapy and two years of experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
- Thorough knowledge of theory, principles and methods of occupational therapy.
- Considerable knowledge of appropriate evaluating tools.
- Considerable knowledge of the equipment and assistive technology available to use in therapy.
- Considerable knowledge of feeding issues such as food consistency, oral motor functioning, adaptive equipment and specific feeding techniques.
- General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration.
- Skill in adapting or designing equipment for individual needs.
- Skill in administering treatment.
- Ability to select and administer appropriate assessment and treatment activities.
- Ability to screen, evaluate and provide required occupational therapy services.
- Ability to develop and implement individualized programs.
- Ability to make decisions that may have medical, orthopedic or neurological implications.
- Ability to accurately document sessions.
- Ability to train others in simple therapy principles.
- Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to develop simple reports from those records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

**Qualifications**:

- Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program
- CPR/First Aid certification (beneficial).
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to motivate and encourage clients.
