Counsellor

The Counsellor provides emotional and psychological support to residents, families, and staff in the nursing home. This role is essential in promoting mental well-being, coping strategies, and enhancing quality of life for elderly residents facing age-related challenges, grief, adjustment issues, or end-of-life concerns.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Provide individual and group counselling sessions for residents dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, or adjustment issues.
- Support families by offering guidance during challenging transitions or end-of-life stages.
- Collaborate with nursing, medical, and caregiving teams to assess residents’ emotional and psychological needs.
- Monitor mental health status and refer residents for psychiatric or specialist interventions if needed.
- Facilitate therapeutic activities such as reminiscence therapy, coping skills workshops, or mindfulness sessions.
- Offer emotional debriefing and support to staff when needed (especially after difficult events).
- Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards in all counselling interactions.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports on counselling sessions and resident progress.
- Participate in case conferences and multidisciplinary care planning.
- Educate staff on handling residents with emotional or psychological needs.
**Qualifications**:
- Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Registered or licensed counsellor under the appropriate governing body (e.g., Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia).
- At least 1-2 years of experience in elderly care, geriatric counselling, or healthcare setting preferred.
**Skills & Competencies**:
- Excellent listening and interpersonal communication skills.
- Empathetic, patient, and respectful toward the elderly.
- Strong understanding of geriatric mental health issues and dementia care.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Fluent in spoken and written Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and English (additional languages are a plus).
Pay: RM3,500.00 - RM4,200.00 per month
