Life Unlimited.
At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.
This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of measurement systems and instruments used across manufacturing and production processes. Key responsibilities include calibrating precision instruments, maintaining measurement equipment, and conducting First Article Inspections (FAI) to verify product compliance with specifications. The role will collaborate closely with Metrology Engineers and Quality Engineering teams to validate product dimensions, monitor quality performance, and ensure adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
What will you be doing?
- Perform calibration and maintenance of various measuring instruments and equipment—including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMMs, and optical systems—according to the calibration schedule to ensure precision and accuracy. Investigate and resolve discrepancies or malfunctions, perform minor repairs, and coordinate external servicing when required.
- Work closely with Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Production teams to ensure measurement and inspection processes meet production requirements. Prepare and maintain clear, accurate calibration and inspection reports, ensuring proper documentation and traceability for audits. Liaise with external calibration service providers and manage the inventory of metrology tools and supplies.
- Identify and implement opportunities to enhance calibration efficiency, accuracy, and reliability. Support internal and external audits by providing relevant documentation such as calibration certificates and FAI records. Maintain equipment in a 5S-compliant manner and adhere to all HSE, sustainability, and energy policies—actively promoting safety, environmental responsibility, and process excellence.
What will you need to be successful?
- Diploma or equivalent in Metrology, Mechanical, or Engineering Technology or a related field is preferred. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) will be an added advantage. No specific licenses or certifications are required for this role.
- A minimum of 3–5 years of experience in Metrology, Calibration, or Quality Control within a regulated industry is preferred. Experience in the medical device manufacturing industry and familiarity with ISO 13485, FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, and MDSAP standards will be an added advantage.
- Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings and apply measurement and inspection techniques (including GD&T) is desirable. Proficiency in using metrology instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMMs, and optical measuring systems is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate solid knowledge of measurement principles and calibration standards (GD&T, ANSI, ASTM, ISO), be familiar with Microsoft Office applications, and possess strong analytical, communication, and multitasking skills. The role may require extended periods of sitting or standing.
