A 3D game artist is responsible for creating and implementing the visual elements of a video game, such as characters, environments, and props, by using 3D modeling, texturing, and animation software. Key duties include translating concept art into 3D models, optimizing assets for performance, and collaborating with other team members like designers and programmers to ensure a cohesive final product.

Key responsibilities:

  • 3D modeling: Create digital models for all in-game assets, from characters and weapons to vehicles and scenery, based on concept art and briefs.
  • Texturing and materials: Develop and apply textures and materials to give 3D models their final look and feel.
  • Animation: Animate characters and objects to bring them to life with realistic movement.
  • Optimization: Ensure that 3D assets are optimized for performance and memory usage to maintain smooth gameplay.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with game designers, developers, and other artists to maintain a consistent visual style and meet project goals.

Key skills:

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting software, such as Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, and/or ZBrush..
  • Strong understanding of art principles, including composition, color theory, anatomy, and shading.
  • Knowledge of animation and motion capture editing software is also beneficial.
  • The ability to receive and implement feedback from directors, designers, and other team members.
  • Engine Experience: Unreal Engine, Unity, or a comparable engine.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional experience as a 3D Artist in the game industry.
  • An impressive portfolio demonstrating a strong foundation in 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting.

Key Competencies:

  • A solid understanding of the entire asset creation pipeline, from blockout to engine implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of PBR workflows, topology, UV unwrapping, and baking.
  • Excellent eye for detail, form, colour, and lighting.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
