Project Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD-level researcher to join our environmental biosensor projects focusing on the development of next-generation microbial electrochemical sensors (MES) for real-time wastewater and environmental monitoring.
These projects integrate IoT, electronic design, cloud connectivity, and AI-based data analysis to enhance sensor automation, field deployment, and industrial service readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, assemble, and optimize electronic and IoT subsystems for microbial and electrochemical sensor platforms.
- Program and integrate data acquisition systems (e.g., ADC, microcontrollers, PLC/SCADA, and wireless modules).
- Develop algorithms for signal conditioning, data analytics, and cloud upload for real-time environmental monitoring dashboards.
- Collaborate on AI-driven predictive monitoring and anomaly detection modules.
- Contribute to mechanical design of sensor housings and fixtures using CAD tools (SolidWorks 2018, ICAD, AutoCAD).
- Participate in field installation, calibration, and maintenance of biosensors in collaboration with industrial partners.
- Provide technical documentation, reports, and publication support.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong experience in:
- Electronic circuit design (analog/digital, PCB prototyping)
- IoT system integration (sensors, data loggers, cloud APIs)
- Programming in C/C++, Python, and CX-Programmer (PLC/SCADA)
- Mechanical CAD design (SolidWorks, ICAD, AutoCAD)
- Data analytics and visualization for cloud or AI applications
- Good understanding of environmental sensors or electrochemical systems is a plus.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with wireless communication protocols (LoRa, Wi-Fi, MQTT, etc.)
- Experience with AWS/Azure/Google Cloud IoT platforms
- Hands-on ability to interface sensors with microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi)
- Knowledge of machine learning or signal processing for environmental data interpretation
- Strong teamwork, technical documentation, and problem-solving skills.
Project Environment
You will work within a multidisciplinary team under UKM's environmental sensor research cluster, collaborating with engineers, chemists, and data scientists. The position involves both laboratory prototyping and field deployment in collaboration with industry partners.
