Job Purpose
  • Speech language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists) assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in patients.
Speech, language, and swallowing disorders result from a variety of causes, such as a stroke, brain injury, hearing loss, developmental delay, a cleft palate, cerebral palsy, or emotional problems. Duties
  • Communicate with patients to evaluate their levels of speech or language difficulty.
  • Determine the extent of communication problems by having a patient complete basic reading and vocalizing tasks or by giving standardized tests.
  • Identify treatment options.
  • Create and carry out an individualized treatment plan.
  • Teach patients how to make sounds and improve their voices.
  • Teach alternative communication methods, such as sign language, to patients with little or no speech capability.
  • Work with patients to improve their ability to read and write correctly.
  • Work with patients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow.
  • Counsel patients and families on how to cope with communication disorders.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct evaluations and establish individualized therapy plans with short and long term goals according to the standard procedures.
  • Perform the therapy plan professionally and prepare progress report for each client from time to time.
  • Preserves and protects client's confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education programs to monitor proficiency, expand current knowledge and enhance professional excellence. Willingly shares knowledge and provides clinical orientation to other members of the staff.
  • Manage student behavior through monitoring, supervising and assessing behavioral patterns
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment at all time.
  • Educating caregivers and family members of clients on patient care.
  • Ensure that verbal and written communications including tone, demeanour and content with children and parents are always professional, appropriate and respectful.
  • Demonstrates professionalism as a healthcare professional by being punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed work task.
