To ensure database performance, availability, and security in a hyper-growth environment, we optimize processes and best practices for databases. As Grab expands into a Superapp, we are expanding our database fleet with multiple open-source databases and tooling.

About the Role

Database Reliability Engineers (DBRE) are responsible for maintaining database systems that support user-facing services and other Grab production systems. DBREs combine database engineering and administration expertise with software development skills, applying sound engineering principles, operational discipline, and mature automation. They specialize in databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB) and work closely with SREs, Infrastructure teams, and engineering teams.

Critical Tasks You Will Perform

  • Work on database reliability and performance aspects for Grab, collaborating with application teams to ship solutions.
  • Analyze solutions and implement best practices for supported datastores (Primarily MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB).
  • Monitor and observe relevant database metrics to achieve database objectives.
  • Collaborate with peers (SREs, Application Engineers) to roll out changes to our production environment and mitigate database-related incidents.
  • Provide on-call support on rotation with the team.
  • Offer database expertise to engineering teams through reviews of database migrations, queries, and performance optimizations.
  • Automate database infrastructure and provide self-service tools to support engineering success.
  • Plan database growth and manage capacity to support hundreds of thousands of concurrent users.
  • Design, build, and maintain database infrastructure to enable scalability.
  • Support and debug database production issues across services and levels of the stack.
  • Maintain monitoring and alerting that focuses on symptoms and SLOs, rather than outages.
  • Document actions to turn learnings into repeatable actions and automation.
  • Analyze and implement solutions regarding database administration (e.g., backups, performance tuning).
  • Develop specifications for future database requirements, including enhancements, upgrades, and capacity planning.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience running MySQL/PostgreSQL databases in large environments.
  • At least 2 years of experience with infrastructure automation (Ansible/Terraform).
  • Awareness of cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP) and solid knowledge of SQL.
  • Understanding of the internals of MySQL/PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively.
  • Proactive attitude with a desire to fix issues when they arise.
  • Familiarity with Linux and the Unix Shell.
  • Possession of data modeling and data structure design skills.
