English Instructor

**Job Summary**

Reporting directly to the Academic Director or Academic coordinator, the English Language Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching and evaluating assigned classes in accordance with the ELS Language Centers curriculum with assistance from the AD or AC, Instructional Specialists and Senior English Language Instructors; for maintaining student class records; for fulfilling administrative duties as required and/or requested by the AD or AC; and for participating in professional development activities such as workshops, meetings and assisting Associate English Language Instructors.

**Job Duties**
- To teach any of the ELS academic programmes as assigned by the Academic Director or Academic Coordinator.
- To prepare lesson plans, exercises and tests.
- To test, evaluate and counsel the student regarding his/her classroom performance.
- To maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning.
- To co-ordinate instruction, attendance records and evaluation with other teachers.
- To know and adhere to Center policy and procedures and to communicate local policy to associate English Language

Instructors.
- To complete administrative paperwork as required or requested.
- To maintain performance and attendance records.
- To maintain Center resource materials and files
- To refer non-academic problems to the appropriate person(s).
- To be willing to observe for purposes of professional development and to be observed in all facets of the programmes.
- To participate in administrative meetings and professional development activities.
- To participate in the employee evaluation process (classroom observations and follow-up discussions and the

performance appraisal process).
- To provide Associate English Language Instructors with assistance.
- To develop and /or refine teaching materials at the local level.
- To participate in activities during the English Language Instructor’s scheduled class hours and when requested, to

disseminate information about after-class activities
- To contribute to the maintenance of neat classrooms and a neat staff workroom and staff lounge.
- To substitute in emergency situations when there are no reasonable alternatives available to the AD or AC.

**Standards of Performance**
1. The English Language Instructor prepares his/her students to meet the academic objectives and requirements of the
level as stated in the appropriate instructional manuals and advances students who meet those same objectives and
requirements.
2. The teacher at each ascending category (i.e., Associate English Language Instructor, English Language Instructor,
Senior English Language Instructor, English Language Instructor Specialist) displays a higher degree of teaching
expertise and proficiency with the ELS Language Centers curriculum and methodologies based on the class
observation report utilized by the AD or AC.
3. It is observed that class objectives are defined and are being met through lesson planning, exercises and testing
necessitated by absence.
4. The English Language Instructor tests and evaluates his/her students on required material so that evaluations are
substantiated and students are informed of these evaluations in accordance with Center procedures, throughout the
course of the session.
5. The English Language Instructor begins class on time, ensures that only English is spoken in class, maintains student
attention, maximizes student participation and demonstrates objectively, cultural sensitivity and self-control.
6. The English Language Instructor complies with all requests to coordinate instruction, attendance records and
evaluation with other teachers.
7. The English Language Instructor pursues and demonstrates, in practice, knowledge of Company and Center policies
and procedures as set forth in the local Policies and procedures Manual and Student Handbook.
8. The English Language Instructor completes administrative paperwork accurately and on time as scheduled by the AD
or AC.
9. The English Language Instructor can show the AD or AC an up-to-date, accurate Enrollment and Evaluation Records
(or comparable records) at any time during the session.
10. The English Language Instructor borrows and returns Centre resource materials and maintain files according to Centre
policy.
11. The English Language Instructor consents to observing and to being observed in accordance with local policy.
12. The English Language Instructor demonstrates, in practice, the ability to refer non-academic problems to the
appropriate person(s).
13. The English Language Instructor attends administrative meetings as scheduled. The English Language Instructor
demonstrates the motivation to consistently improve his/her teaching skills through reading current literature,
participating in Centre staff development activities and attending professional conferences as available and to the
extent possible.
