Database Administrator

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, maintain and optimize our organization's database systems, including operational databases and data warehouse environments.

The role involves ensuring database performance, availability and security across our in-house developed web-based and client-server applications.

Role is on-site in our VMM Holdings office in Sunway Velocity, Kuala Lumpur.

Key Responsibilities

Database Administration & Maintenance

• Install, configure, and maintain MySQL database servers and instances.
• Plan and perform database upgrades, patching, and backups.
• Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and data integrity through proper configuration and replication strategies.
• Implement and maintain database security policies and user access controls.

Performance Tuning & Optimization

• Monitor and analyze database performance metrics.
• Identify and resolve query performance issues, indexing, and schema optimization.
• Collaborate with developers to improve SQL query efficiency and application database performance.
• Conduct capacity planning and optimize resource usage.

Data Warehouse & ETL Management

• Design, implement, and maintain data warehouse structures for reporting and analytics.
• Develop and manage ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows and data pipelines.
• Ensure data consistency, quality, and reliability across systems.
• Collaborate with BI/reporting teams to optimize data delivery and reporting accuracy.

Development Support

• Work closely with in-house application developers to define efficient database schema, stored procedures, and data access logic.
• Support database integration with web-based and client systems.
• Participate in system design reviews to ensure scalability and data integrity.
• Provide technical guidance on database best practices to the development team.

Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation

• Set up monitoring tools and alerts for database health, performance, and capacity.
• Maintain detailed documentation of database structures, configurations, and processes.
• Generate regular reports on database performance, usage trends, and incidents.

Backup, Recovery & Compliance

• Define and test backup and recovery strategies.
• Ensure data protection and compliance with internal and external standards.
• Regularly test restore procedures and maintain backup validation logs.

Requirements

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in database administration (MySQL preferred)
• Language abilities in English, Malay and Mandarin due to work associates

Technical Skills

• Experienced and Strong SQL skill is preferred
• Proficiency in MySQL administration, configuration, and troubleshooting
• Strong experience in SQL performance tuning and query optimization
• Familiarity with data warehouse design and ETL tools/processes
• Hands-on experience with Linux and Windows database hosting environments
• Experience with replication, backup tools, and disaster recovery planning
• Understanding of database security, roles, encryption, and access management
• Cloud database experience (e.g., AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL, or Azure Database for MySQL) would be advantageous
• BI tools exposure (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or Metabase)
• Audit and compliance reporting
