Job Description - Science Lab Technician

The International School @ ParkCity, Kuala Lumpur ) is located in the exclusive residential area of Desa ParkCity, Kuala Lumpur ). Qualifications: Minimum qualification of STPM in Science/ A-Level. A degree in Science is desirable but not essential.

The Science Lab Technician should be an adaptable and resourceful individual who will work to support teachers in the education of the students at ISP. They must be able to communicate effectively in English, relate well to young people and maintain a flexible working relationship with teachers, students and the other lab technicians. The responsibilities for the role include, but are not limited to:

Main Responsibilities and Expectations

● To be responsible to the Head Science Technician / Head of Science / Assistant Head of Science in the day to day coordination, use and development of practical resources and facilities in the laboratory

● To support assigned teachers in their delivery of Science lessons

● Ability to deputise in the absence of the Head Science Technician

● The ability to work as part of a team and be flexible and adaptable

● The ability to follow instructions as directed by the Head of Science / Assistant Head of Science and Senior Science Technician

● The ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines

● To ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment through:

• Actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring and review of both health & safety procedures and information resources;

• Keeping up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development;

• The provision of technical advice and support on health & safety issues to teaching staff and potential trainee staff;

• The safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances and responding to actual or potential hazards;

• The healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials

Teaching and learning

● Work with groups of students to assist with the delivery of the teacher-planned lessons as and when directed by the class teacher or Head of Department / Assistant Head of Department

● Assist with school activities such as Science COALS Week, Science Club and field-trips

● Assist in running the Annual Science Assembly

● Work with individual students and support them on research projects as directed by their teachers

Administrative duties

● Organise equipment and prepare materials for lessons.

● Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks.

● Prepare and present displays of students' work.

● Photocopying for assessment papers as and when required.

● Undertake lunchtime or break duties as required.

Standards and Quality Assurance

● Support the aims and ethos of the school.

● Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.

● Attend team and staff meetings as required.

● Report any Health and Safety concerns around the school.

Additional Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Head Science Technician, to ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repair of equipment are carried out to the required standard.

● To maintain and keep a stock of all science equipment in the assigned laboratories, and to ensure that all stock is in good working order

● To bring the required equipment in good time for the lesson, assemble the apparatus where required, and remove it at the end of each lesson

● Obtaining materials by local purchase

● To test and make sure that the equipment is working for the lessons

● Make sure that each laboratory is tidy at the end of each day

● Assist the department with sourcing materials and quotations as required by the Head Science technician

● Participate in continuing Professional Development as required

Child Protection

●Actively support and adhere to the Child Protection Policy, including attending annual training.
