Job Description: Design Engineer (Mechanical / Structural)

Location: Ipoh,Perak

Employment Type: Full-Time

Industry: Steel Fabrication & Engineering (Structural, Tanks, Silos, Conveying Systems)

Salary:

  • Junior Position: RM2,500 per month
  • Senior Position: up to RM5,000 per month (depending on years of experience)

1. Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer with a strong mechanical engineering background and proven experience in drafting and detailing structural steel, storage tanks, silo systems, and conveying equipment (screw conveyors, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, etc.).

The ideal candidate will be responsible for producing accurate engineering drawings, supporting project teams, and ensuring all designs comply with industry standards and client specifications.

2. Key Responsibilities

Design & Drafting

  • Prepare shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and GA drawings for:
  • Structural steel platforms, frames, supports
  • Storage tanks and silo systems
  • Mechanical conveying systems (screw, belt, chain conveyor
  • Develop detailed part drawings, bill of materials (BOM), and cutting lists for production.
  • Create 3D models and assemblies using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Tekla Structures or similar).

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Work closely with project managers and site teams to clarify design requirements.
  • Ensure designs follow engineering principles, load requirements, safety standards, and applicable codes.
  • Provide technical input during tendering, fabrication, and installation stages.
  • Review supplier drawings, client drawings, and coordinate revisions.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure accuracy and quality of all drawings before submission and fabrication.
  • Maintain drawing and document control according to company standards.
  • Conduct design checks, clash checks, and ensure manufacturability.

3. Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Experience

Minimum 2–5 years of experience in design/drafting for:

Structural steel fabrication

Storage tanks and silo systems

Mechanical conveying systems


Strong knowledge of fabrication methods, welding symbols, tolerances, and material standards.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in AutoCAD (2D & 3D).
  • Advantageous: experience with SolidWorks, Inventor, Tekla, or similar 3D modelling tools.
  • Familiar with engineering codes: ASME, API, AWS, DIN/ISO, and steel/tank fabrication standards.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Good communication and teamwork.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver accurate drawings on tight timelines.

4. Additional Preferences (Optional)

  • Experience in industrial equipment installations or construction project coordination.
  • Ability to perform basic structural/mechanical calculations.
  • Familiarity with Bill of Quantities (BQ) and project documentation.
  • Knowledge of site measurement and as-built drawings.
