Engineering Director

Position Description:

The purpose of the Engineering and Technology Director role is to fulfil the functional directorship, and the Engineering Authority role as set out in BAE Systems Engineering Policy. The role leads the Engineering and Technology function such that products and services are fit for purpose, safe, managed, controlled, governed and delivered to customers, partners and stakeholders to meet exacting contractual, technical, regulatory, legal and business requirements . The Engineering Director provides leadership and line management to a team of predominantly technical staff, is accountable for developing and executing a strategy for the engineering and technology function within Digital Intelligence and is measured on business objectives.

The role provides advice and guidance to the Digital Intelligence Leadership Team and exerts influence to ensure appropriate technologies are adopted. The use and adoption of technology is a key differentiator for the business.

The Engineering Director is directly accountable for ensuring all Group requirements covering governance, delegated authority and process are fully implemented followed and observed.

Core Duties:

  • Lead, direct, guide, deploy capability, governance and control within the engineering function such that products and service are fit for purpose, safe and meet business, legal, regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Accountable for the definition and delivery of the engineering and technology strategy for Digital Intelligence, in support of Digital Intelligence strategy priorities and growth ambitions, and align to the direction set by the CTIO.
  • Drive continuous engineering improvement, learning from good practice and experience across the engineering and technology function in Digital Intelligence, sharing good practice with and from the wider Engineering function in BAE Systems.
  • Maintain engineering policies, processes, methods and tools appropriate to the engineering and technology function in line with enterprise-wide functional excellence;
  • Prioritise product and technology investment, in liaison with BU Directors;
  • Govern appropriate and effective application of policy and process (e.g. design reviews);
  • Rationalise and articulate Digital Intelligence's technology needs, both internally and as a customer offering, identifying gaps and enabling value-adding strategic alliances;
  • Accountable for the definition and delivery of the consolidated business technology roadmap, supporting proposals from the business and promoting direct development and reuse of Intellectual Property across the business;
  • Lead the evolution of a learning culture incorporating exploitation of good practice and knowledge sharing, and learning from experience;
  • Enable an environment which fosters the continual development of professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies as appropriate;
  • Utilise effective measures of functional performance to drive functional improvement;
  • Represent Digital Intelligence in the corporate engineering council and lead on objectives as appropriate;
  • Build productive working relationships with other areas of the business in order to maximise the performance of the engineering and technology function;
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory, legal and professional standards.

Depending on the particular job being performed, seniority and experience, the Engineering Director may typically have a range of these specific accountabilities.

  • Be accountable and responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Engineering Function;
  • Responsible for the career development of engineers within the function through the Career Management Leads;
  • Be an inspirational thought-leader in Engineering and enthuse the community toward its aims and aspirations;
  • Set the Engineering and Technology function strategy and objectives, and be accountable for their delivery;
  • Manage and develop the Engineering and technology function is in-line with the Digital Intelligence objectives;
  • Horizon-scanning industry innovations and competitive landscape and recommends strategies to obtain competitive advantage;
  • Cascade Engineering Council actions through to the Discipline Leads and Heads of Engineering and report on divisional progress on any engineering transformation;
  • Ensure the Engineering and Technology function works with customers to agree the level of safety that is required for each Product, seeking the highest reasonably practicable level of safety of those who might be unintentionally harmed by the Product;
  • Manage the Engineering and technology function works with customers and suppliers to achieve exchange of information on use and performance throughout the life of each Product;
  • Lead the Engineering and technology function such that it seeks to learn from other parts of the Company, organisations and domains;
  • Ensure that appropriate independent investigation of incidents and accidents is undertaken;
  • Ensure that delivered or traded Products conform to their definition;
  • Ensure appropriate alignment of the management systems for Product Security, Product Safety and Health & Safety;
  • Establish, maintain & continuously improve the business's engineering management framework;
  • Manage effective control of the business's engineering activities;
  • Improve the business's Engineering effectiveness;
  • Ensure that operational procedures and working practices are fit for purpose;
  • Provides support, mentoring and assurance to projects that are require high degrees of assurance.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Build a team of professionals with appropriate skills, attitudes and motivation;
  • Provide leadership of the engineering community across the business, and drive an appropriate culture within this community;
  • Lead the implementation of talent processes in engineering and appropriate mentoring and coaching performed to promote and encourage high-potential employees;
  • Inspire, train and develop the careers of engineers;
  • Provide mentoring and career guidance to the general Engineering Function as required.
  • Functional accountability for 2,500 Engineering and Technology employees in Digital Intelligence
  • 6 direct senior FTEs (central) and 24 indirect FTEs

Budget responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the reward budget for Engineering and Technology
  • Accountable for overall Engineering and Technology budget (Sustain and transform and training budgets totalling £1m)
  • Central E&T budget (15 FTE)
  • Influence product and investment budget £10ms per year
