UWCSEA Dover is looking for a Scenic Construction and Carpenter (Senior Technician (Theatre)) to start from March 2024.

Reporting to the Head of Drama, the primary purpose and function of this role is to plan, coordinate, provide creative problem solving and construct the sets for Drama productions (extra curricular and co-curricular). Working closely with the Drama department and Drama technical team, this role is responsible for planning sets, organising the sourcing of materials, safely build sets for the productions, including the painting of sets. The role is also responsible for the maintenance of the backstage areas of the Dover campus theatres, ensuring a safe and tidy environment.

Main Responsibilities
- Liaise with teacher directors on the set design needs for each production.
- Ensure sets are delivered on an agreed timeline, planning and sourcing materials as needed
- Design and build the sets to a high level of finish, trouble-shooting and problem solving as needed
- Ensure safe working practices for all people involved in the set building process
- Coordinate with the Facilities department to ensure the safe and efficient use of resources for set building Supervise and instruct student assistants, particularly in the area of set painting
- Manage the set construction element of the Drama productions budget, in coordination with the Head of Drama

Person Specifications
- Diploma level in appropriate technical or design field, or equivalent professional experience.
- At least 2 years experience. 5 years experience or more would be advantageous.
- Experience in setting design and construction skills are essential
- Safe working practices, especially with regards to working at height, are essential.
- Ability to communicate with teacher-directors, event coordinators, students, other departments, outside contractors and Facilities is essential
- Strong organisational skills to manage workflow, budgets and demands on time are essential
- Ability to work with appropriate document and spreadsheet software to effectively coordinate and plan is highly advantageous
- Ability to work creatively to solve design challenges and support the work of teacher-directors and event coordinators with innovative approaches to sound is highly advantageous
- Collaborative skills of working as part of a team to support the productions and events as required are highly advantageous
