Job Description: Level 3 Storage Engineer (IBM SVC & IBM TSM)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Level 3 Storage Engineer with strong expertise in IBM Storage Virtualization Controller (SVC) and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) / Spectrum Protect. The candidate will play a key role in managing, optimizing, and troubleshooting enterprise-class storage and backup infrastructures. This role requires deep technical skills, problem-solving ability, and the capacity to provide design and architectural guidance for large-scale storage environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Storage Infrastructure Management
  • Administer and support IBM SVC storage virtualization environments, ensuring optimal performance, availability, and capacity utilization.
  • Manage SAN zoning, multipathing, and storage provisioning for AIX, IBM i, Linux, and Windows servers.
  • Perform firmware upgrades, configuration changes, and health checks on IBM SVC clusters.
  • Backup & Recovery Management (TSM/Spectrum Protect)
  • Design, implement, and maintain backup and recovery solutions using IBM TSM.
  • Manage backup policies, retention schedules, disaster recovery planning, and tape/disk backup targets.
  • Perform restores, data recovery, and testing of DR scenarios.
  • Optimize backup performance and storage utilization.
  • Level 3 Support & Troubleshooting
  • Provide advanced incident and problem management for critical storage and backup issues.
  • Analyze root cause, develop solutions, and coordinate with vendors (IBM support) when required.
  • Mentor Level 1 and Level 2 engineers, providing escalation support and knowledge transfer.
  • Design & Architecture
  • Contribute to the design and deployment of new storage and backup solutions.
  • Assess emerging technologies and recommend improvements aligned with business needs.
  • Support large-scale migrations, storage consolidation, and performance tuning projects.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Maintain detailed documentation of storage and backup configurations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with security, governance, and audit requirements.
  • Participate in capacity planning, reporting, and lifecycle management.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Technical Expertise
  • Proven experience in administering IBM SVC storage virtualization.
  • Deep knowledge of IBM TSM / Spectrum Protect backup and recovery.
  • Strong knowledge of SAN technologies (Brocade/Cisco), zoning, and fabric management.
  • Hands-on experience with disk, tape, and virtual tape libraries (VTL).
  • Advanced skills in troubleshooting performance and availability issues.
  • Additional Skills (Preferred but not mandatory)
  • Experience with cloud-integrated storage/backup solutions.
  • Familiarity with other IBM storage technologies (FlashSystem, Storwize, DS8000).
  • Knowledge of scripting (PowerShell, Python, Shell) for automation.
  • Professional Experience
  • Minimum 7–10 years of storage and backup administration experience.
  • At least 5 years of direct IBM SVC and TSM/Spectrum Protect experience.
  • Proven track record in enterprise-level migration and transformation projects.

  • Ability to lead and mentor junior team members.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Strong customer service and stakeholder management orientation.

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • IBM Certified Specialist/Expert in SVC and Spectrum Protect (TSM) preferred.
  • ITIL v4 Foundation certification is an advantage.
