Assistant Librarian – Job Description

Job Overview

The Assistant Librarian ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the library. This role supports students and lecturers in identifying resources that enhance the curriculum and takes responsibility for the day-to-day management of library services.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality customer service to all library users
• Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for students and staff
• Manage, organize, and catalogue library resources (books, journals, online databases, and other digital materials)
• Reshelve and maintain returned items in proper order
• Handle new and renewal membership registrations for the library
• Manage new and renewal accounts for online resources
• Perform routine administrative tasks such as answering phone calls and organizing files
• Assist with interlibrary loan (ILL) services
• Support the librarian in preparing reports on teaching and learning support
• Maintain accurate records of library inventory and circulation
• Assist in preparing reports on library usage, events, and their effectiveness
• Plan and participate in library events and outreach activities
• Engage in professional development aligned with the University's goals and objectives
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications

Education

• Degree in Library and Information Science, Library and Information Management, or equivalent field

Experience

• Minimum of 1–2 years of relevant experience preferred
• Familiarity with library management systems and processes
• Strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills
• Knowledge of current educational frameworks and trends in library services is an advantage
