Tooling Project Engineer – Job Scope
Job Purpose:

To manage and oversee tooling-related projects from design through to production implementation. This includes the development, testing, validation, and continuous improvement of tooling systems (e.g., molds, jigs, dies, fixtures) to ensure they meet production, quality, and cost requirements.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Tooling Design & Development

  2. Collaborate with design teams to develop tools based on product specifications.

  3. Evaluate tool feasibility, material selection, and manufacturing methods.

  4. Provide technical input on tool design improvements and modifications.

  5. Project Management

  6. Plan and lead tooling projects, ensuring on-time delivery and within budget.

  7. Define project scope, timelines, milestones, and risk management plans.

  8. Coordinate with cross-functional teams (production, QA, design, procurement).

  9. Vendor & Supplier Coordination

  10. Source and manage external vendors for tool fabrication and modification.

  11. Review and approve tooling drawings and technical specifications.

  12. Conduct supplier audits and ensure tooling complies with quality standards.

  13. Tool Trials, Testing & Validation

  14. Plan and execute tool testing and qualification activities (T0–Tn runs, FAT/SAT).

  15. Analyze test results and resolve issues related to tool performance, fit, or function.

  16. Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for tool-related failures.

  17. Documentation & Compliance

  18. Prepare technical reports, tooling specifications, drawings, BOMs, and SOPs.

  19. Ensure compliance with ISO, IATF 16949, or other applicable industry standards.

  20. Maintain project documentation, including tooling change requests and approvals.

  21. Continuous Improvement

  22. Identify opportunities to improve tooling performance, lifespan, and cost-efficiency.

  23. Apply lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to tooling processes.
  24. Recommend and implement engineering change requests (ECRs) as needed.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 2–5+ years of experience in tooling, manufacturing, or project engineering.
  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA).
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes: injection molding, stamping, CNC, etc.
  • Experience with project management tools and methodologies.
  • Good problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills.
