What's The Role

• Shell's Mobility Data Science team and help shape the future of our global retail network. As a Retail Network Data Scientist, you'll apply cutting-edge analytics, geospatial modeling, and machine learning to drive smarter decisions on site selection, network planning, customer segmentation, and operational efficiency.
• Lead the development of advanced models to optimize Pump Utilization Analysis, customer demand forecasting, site clustering, geospatial analysis.
• Apply geospatial analytics, clustering, and network optimization techniques to identify high-impact opportunities for new sites and upgrades.
• Analyze structured and unstructured data to uncover trends and performance drivers across Shell's global retail footprint.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across Network, Real Estate, Marketing, and Finance to turn data into strategic action.
• Define and track model performance metrics, ensuring measurable business impact.
• Present complex insights in clear, compelling formats that influence high-level decisions.
• Stay ahead of the curve by exploring emerging ML and GenAI techniques.
• Foster a culture of experimentation, continuous learning, and reuse of scalable solutions across markets

What You Will Be Doing

• Retail Network & Site Analytics: Experience in evaluating site performance, location strategy, and network expansion using data-driven methods.
• Category & Product Insights: Ability to analyze product assortment, category trends, and launch performance to inform network-level merchandising strategies.
• Store-Level Analytics: Deliver insights that empower store teams, territory managers, and regional leads to improve operational efficiency and customer experience.
• Marketing & Promotion Effectiveness: Design and evaluate campaigns, measure promotional impact, and apply techniques like Market Basket Analysis to enhance cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.
• Prior experience in convenience retail, fuel retail, or mobility services is highly preferred.
• Working collaboratively across multiple sets of stakeholders – business SMEs, IT, Data teams, Analytics resources, etc. to deliver on project deliverables and tasks
• Identify actionable insights that directly address marketing challenges / opportunities
• Articulate business insights and recommendations (based on model output) to respective stakeholders
• Understanding business KPI's, frameworks and drivers for performance

What You Bring

• 5–9 years of hands-on experience in data science, with a strong focus on retail network, customer, or marketing analytics.
• Proven ability to lead and collaborate across cross-functional teams, with strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
• Prior experience in retail, convenience, mobility, or e-commerce domains is highly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and drive outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex analytics into clear business recommendations.
• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Economics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.

• Strong experience in specialized analytics tools and technologies (including, but not limited to)

• Azure Databricks, Alteryx

• Power BI, Spotfire or other visualization tools

• Python, R, SQL

• Git Version control and collaborative development practices

• Azure ML, Databricks Mosaic & Genie: Platforms for machine learning, generative AI governance, and natural language interfaces
• Statistics / Mathematics: Data Quality Analysis, Data identification, Hypothesis testing, Univariate / Multivariate Analysis, Cluster Analysis, Classification/PCA, Factor Analysis, Linear Modeling, Affinity & Association, Time Series
• Identify the right approach(es) for given scenario and articulate why the approach fits
• Assess data availability and modeling feasibility
• Exposure to deep learning and reinforcement learning frameworks
• Experience deploying models in production environments
• Knowledge of network and store analytics
• Easily analyzes, draws and synthesizes important insights from complex data.
• Extremely curious and self-driven to understand business performance through data.
• Ability to translate a business or marketing question into a well-defined analytical plan that includes data requirements for technical resources to extract the necessary data.
• Rapid onboarding on projects, understanding analytics goal and working with ill-defined datasets
• Communicating technical jargon in plain English to colleagues within Data Science team and outside
• Virtual working with network of colleagues located throughout the globe
