This role requires the application of deep medical and product knowledge to complex individual and portfolio risks, ensuring profitable growth in line with the company's risk appetite and underwriting philosophy.

What you will do

  • Medically-informed Decision Making: Utilize a formal medical background to critically review and interpret complex clinical data, including Electrocardiograms (ECGs), Treadmill Tests (TMTs)/stress tests, imaging results (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans), pathology reports, and detailed physician records.
  • Facultative Underwriting: Support case underwriters to underwrite the most complex and high-value facultative (individual) cases submitted by ceding companies and provide expert medical opinions, ensuring compliance with the company's risk appetite.
  • Complex Impairments: Apply advanced knowledge of pathophysiology and current medical practices to assess mortality and morbidity risk for individuals with severe, multiple, or rare medical impairments.
  • Clearly communicate the rationale for complex underwriting/medical decisions and ratings to own case underwriters and/or ceding company underwriters and client-facing teams.
  • Consult/Collaborate with the Regional Chief Medical Officer and/or Global Medical Directors on highly complex or unusual medical impairments.
  • Product and Treaty reviews: Product Definition Review: Critically review and provide expert medical and underwriting input on new or revised product definitions and Schedules of Benefits for Life, Critical Illness, Disability, and health products to assess risk aggregation and potential anti-selection. Also to ensure all these are in compliance with the company's risk appetite. Treaty Terms Review: Participate in the review and negotiation of reinsurance treaty terms and conditions to ensure alignment between the risk ceded, the medical underwriting philosophy, and the resulting contractual obligations.
  • Technical Training & Consulting: Client & Internal Staff Training: Develop and deliver technical underwriting training and continuous professional development for client underwriters and internal staff (underwriting, claims, actuarial, business developments, etc) on complex medical conditions, emerging risks, and new guidelines. Consultation: Act as the primary medical underwriting consultant for internal teams, assisting in case appeals and providing rationale for challenging decisions to maintain strong client relationships.
  • Medical Research: Conduct in-depth research on new medical treatments, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and emerging health risks to inform and update the company's medical underwriting guidelines and manuals.
  • Guideline Maintenance: Support the development, review, and refinement of the company's global/regional underwriting manual, integrating the latest research to ensure technical superiority and competitive positioning.
  • Quality and Compliance: Ensure all underwriting activities adhere to internal governance, treaty terms, and global/local regulatory frameworks. Champion best-in-class documentation and underwriting practices.
