Job Description: Medical Officer (Wound Care & Musculoskeletal Focus)

Position Summary

The Medical Officer will provide comprehensive medical care with a clinical emphasis on wound management and musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. The role includes assessing, diagnosing, and managing both acute and chronic wounds as well as MSK-related complaints, while ensuring high standards of patient safety and evidence-based practice.

Key Responsibilities

General Clinical Duties

Perform detailed clinical assessments, physical examinations, and diagnostic evaluations.

Manage a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions.

Develop and communicate individualized treatment plans to patients and caregivers.

Document all clinical findings, interventions, and follow-up plans accurately and promptly.

Special Focus: Wound Care

Conduct comprehensive wound assessments including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure injuries, surgical wounds, venous ulcers, traumatic wounds, and chronic non-healing wounds.

Perform wound debridement, dressing application, and advanced wound care procedures.

Develop individualized, evidence-based wound care plans.

Monitor wound progression, identify complications early, and escalate to specialists when needed.

Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (nurses, surgeons, podiatry, dietitians) to optimize healing.

Provide patient and caregiver education on wound prevention, hygiene, and long-term care.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to wound care services.

Special Focus: Musculoskeletal (MSK) Care

Evaluate and manage MSK conditions such as sprains, strains, back pain, tendinopathies, arthritis, joint pain, and minor injuries.

Perform MSK-focused physical examinations and functional assessments.

Order and interpret relevant investigations (e.g., X-ray, ultrasound, blood tests) when appropriate.

Provide initial treatment including pain management, splinting, basic manipulation, and referral for physiotherapy.

Collaborate with physiotherapists and orthopedic teams for integrated patient care.

Counsel patients on ergonomics, posture, injury prevention, and rehabilitation strategies.

Support continuity of care through structured follow-ups and monitoring of recovery.

Administrative & Professional Responsibilities

Attend clinical meetings, case discussions, and CPD activities.

Assist in developing clinical protocols for wound and MSK services.

Ensure compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and safety standards.

Support health education programs and patient awareness initiatives.

Qualifications & Requirements

Strong interest or prior exposure to wound care and MSK medicine.

Competent in basic wound procedures and MSK assessment techniques.

Excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and teamwork skills.

Ability to multitask and manage patients in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills (Added Advantage)

Certification or formal training in wound care, tissue viability, or MSK medicine.

Experience using advanced wound dressings and therapies (NPWT, hydrocolloid, alginate, etc.).

MSK ultrasound skills or interest in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

Experience in rehabilitation or occupational health.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: RM8, RM8,100.00 per month
